About that email you got last night...
You weren't supposed to get it and I don't know why you did
The temptation is to try and make a joke of this, but frankly, I can’t.
Last night, at around 9:30 p.m., my subscribers got a strange email from me asking them to “create a new password” for Session/Law by clicking on a link to what must have seemed a mysterious and unfamiliar website.
Though it was a legitimate request that you would have received at some point, you weren’t supposed to get that email now. Nor would it have gone out via a Yahoo email account, had I known what was going on. It might have been sent through vendor error or it might have been auto-generated by the Memberpress software that we’re planning to use for subscriptions independent of Substack. But that doesn’t matter. Either way, I’m responsible.
As I have mentioned, we have been in the process of transitioning away from Substack. But I have also promised you that I would not move away from this platform if that changeover caused readers any confusion, disruption or pain.
When those emails went out last night, I failed to keep my word.
Some of you want to know why you need a new password. Others have asked me if they were hacked. To answer in reverse order: First, no, you weren’t hacked--the messages did originate with Session/Law. Second, I can only say I don’t know why this happened now.
The emails were very premature. I didn’t authorize sending them and I would not have, had I been asked. The new Session/Law is simply not ready. As mentioned, I have not even fully committed to making the leap, though we were getting close to that decision when this happened.
I had wanted to make an announcement when I felt comfortable that everything was complete, when I could describe in detail what’s different and when all those paid and free Substack subscriptions were safely ported over. None of that has happened.
The only thing I can say is, I’m sorry. I let you down. I hope you can still see fit to follow me over to the new Session/Law, when and if we go live with it.
A final note: To prevent the confusion of having readers get yet more confounding emails from me, this morning I withheld two Session/Law stories that were scheduled to go out around 6 a.m. I will wait a little while more to let you absorb this information. Then I will send those pieces out later today.
